The Immigration Of My Ashkenazi Jewish Hosias Family of Mitau, Courland, Russia (Jelgava, Latvia)

I found immigration documents on my Ashkenazi Jewish ancestors to United States.

I know that my maternal grandmother's mother' s name was Ruth Rosenthal born in Nebraska in 1913. 1930 and 1940 Census Records showed that her parents were Max Rosenthal born in Romania in 1886 and Irene born in Latvia in 1912.  Max's father was Samuel Rosenthal born in Romania in 1858.  They were Ashkenazi Jews.

Max and Irene's Scotts Bluff, Nebraska marriage certificate reveals that Irene's maiden name was Hosias.   Max's parents were revealed to be Samuel Rosenthal and Mary Josephs.  Irene's parents were revealed to be Herman Hosias and Sarah Hershberg.

Ruth's brother Edward Rosenthal's birth certificate recorded mother Irene's birthplace was Mitawa (Mitau), Courland which was part of Russia until Latvia was established in 1918.   Irene's nationality was Russian at the time of her immigration.

Ruth and Sylvia were twin sisters born on December 21, 1913 in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska.

I learned that they had immigrated separately and they even departed from different countries and they originally made their American home in Pennsylvania.

July 5, 1907 Declaration of Intention with 1913 Naturalization Petition Record shows that my 3rd Great Grandfather Herman Hosias was born in Mitau, Russia on December 3, 1858.  He emigrated from Liverpool, England. He arrived in New York, New York on June 1, 1906.  He was a watchmaker. He was recorded as white,  5'7 with black hair, brown eyes, and dark complexion. He was recorded as residing in 1328 Colwell St  Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1907 and 1017 Carson St Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1913. His wife at the time was Jeanette and not Sarah which was recorded as my 2nd Great Grandmother Irene's mother's name on her marriage record.

He had three children:

Rahel born on March 15, 1889 living in Torrington, Wyoming (same city that my 2nd Great Grandfather Max Rosenthal was living according to 1910 US Census). She was my 2nd Great Grandmother Irene. I don't know why her birth year was recorded 1892 for Census and marriage.

Max born on September 14, 1891 living in Altoona, Pennsylvania

Adolph born July 13,  1894 living in Atlanta, Georgia

New York, U.S., Arriving Passenger and Crew Lists (including Castle Garden and Ellis Island), 1820-1957 listed Rathel Hosias born in Mitau, Russia in 1889.  Her nationality/ethnicity is shown as Hebrew.  Her last residence was Riga, Russia.  She departed from Antwerp,  Belgium. She departed from Antwerp, Belgium and arrived in New York in 1911.  Her final destination was recorded as Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Herman Hosias was listed as person in US. She arrived in New York, New York on Aug 4, 1911.  She was 4'11 with dark hair, brown eyes, and dark complexion.  Person in Old Country listed was B. Hirschberg whose relationship was recorded as her uncle living in Parktrasse 8 Riga Gub. Sivland.   Rathel Hosias was definitely my 3rd Great Grandfather Herman's daughter Rahel and my 2nd Great Grandmother.

World War 1 registration record shows that Adolph was born on June 13, 1894. He was described as being  Caucasian of medium height and medium build with light brown hair and gray eyes. Address recorded was 1017 Carson St , Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He was working as a clerk at the time.

His 1926 Death Certificate showed that he died by suicide by drinking Lysol at the age of 33. Russia was put down as his birthplace. He was a merchant.  Name of father was put down as Herman Hosias with birthplace as Russia. Name of mother was put down as Sarah Hespat with birthplace as Russia.  Herman Hosias was the informant, and he was living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the time.

US 1910 Census showed that Herman Hosias was 51 born in 1859 in Russia.  He was living on 1017 Carson St in Pittsuburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Both of his parents' birthplaces were listed as Russia. His native tongue was recorded as English.  He was a self employed watchmaker. He rented a house.  He was able to read and write. He is recorded as being married for 10 years. His wife was recorded as Jetta age 44.  He had two sons recorded as Uran L Hosias age 20 and Adolf Hosias age 18.  Hillarion A. Hansen was recorded as 20 year old boarder.

US 1920 Census showed that Herman Hosias was 60 born about 1860 in Russia. He was living on 1220 Carson St in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Both of his parents' birthplaces were listed as Russia. His native tongue was recorded as Yiddish. His immigration year was recorded as 1906. He was self employed watchmaker that owned a jewelry store. He rented a house. He was able to read and write. His wife was recorded as Getta age 52.  He had one son recorded as Aldopho Hosias age 24.

There is a November 19, 1923 death certificate of Jette Hosias who was listed as being married to Herman Hosias. She died of Chronic Insterstitial Nephritis with Chronic Myocarditis as secondary at the age of 52.  She is recorded as being born in 1871 in Mitau, Kurland (Courland), Russia. Her father was recorded as Herzel Hertzberg. Mother was recorded as unknown.  Adolph Hosias was the informant.

Jeanette 'Jette' (Hertzberg) Hosias was the stepmother of my 2nd Great Grandmother Irene and her brothers.  Their mother Sarah may have died before my 3rd Great Grandfather Herman re-married and immigrated to USA.    I wonder about my 3rd Great Grandmother Sarah's last name recorded as Hespat on Adolph's death certificate.  That's different from Hershberg on my 2nd Great Grandmother Irene's marriage record.  I also wonder if Hershberg was referring to her stepmother Hette's maiden name Hertzberg. I also wonder what kind of name is Hespat. I have never seen that name before, and I even wonder if it was a mistake made on the record.

New York, U.S., Arriving Passenger and Crew Lists (including Castle Garden and Ellis Island), 1820-1957  listed Hinde Hosias born in Milan, Courland in 1865, and that was her last residence. Her ethnicity/nationality is recorded as Hebrew. She departed from Libau, Latvia. She arrived in New York, New York on Aug 8, 1907. Her final destination was recorded as Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was 5'8 with brown hair, brown eyes, and dark complexion.  Person in Old Country Residence was recorded as Talsen, Courland. Person in US was recorded as Herman Hosias whose relationship was recorded as husband

I think that Hinde Hosias may have been Jeanette 'Getta/Jetta' Hosias with her husband recorded as Herman Hosias and her final destination recorded as Pittsburg, Pennsylvania,  but the birth years were different.

There is a Feb 10,  1917 Naturalization Petition record of Moses Hosias who was born in Mitau, Courland, Russia on September 6, 1889.  He emigrated from Libau, Russia. He arrived in New York, New York on November 16, 1909.  He was a mechanic. He was recorded as white,  5'6 with brown hair, brown eyes, and dark complexion. He was recorded as not married.  He was recorded as residing in 1017 Carson St Pittsburg. Moses Hosias was definitely part of my Hosias family.

New York, U.S., Arriving Passenger and Crew Lists (including Castle Garden and Ellis Island), 1820-1957 listed Moisey Hosias age 20. His nationality is shown as Russia, Hebrew. Immigration date was November 16, 1909. Additional person's name was recorded as Rachel Hosias. Second Additional person's name was recorded as father Herman Hosias.  This was definitely Moses Hosias who lived with Herman Hosias.

I joined this Jewish Database site.

https://www.jewishgen.org

I looked up Hosias in Latvia birth database

I found my 2nd Great Grandmother listed

Rachel Hosias

father: Herman Hosias

mother: Sarah Hirschberg

date of birth:  9/2/1888

day is written first, then month, then year

so it's February 9, 1888

Jewish date of birth: Tues 9 Adar 5648]

Mitava

Courland

Father's occupation: Watchmaker. [According to the Mitau address book of 1892, Herman HOSIAS was also a watch wholesaler on Catholic st 3.] Jelgava / Mitau / Mitava

so confirms what I found on ancestry.com

My 2nd Great Grandmother Irene's birth name was Rachel

On her marriage certificate with my 2nd Great Grandfather Max Rosenthal, her parents were recorded as Herman Hosias and Sarah Hershberg.

so I got the right Herman Hosias who was a watchmaker that lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The Many Ethnic Groups and Languages of Africa - The Most Diverse Continent

This is a blog post about the ethnic groups of Africa which is a continent that consists of over 50 countries and has thousands of ethnic groups. What I have noticed about ethnic groups is that there no clear definition of what they are.  That's what I am noticing in countries in general. In regards to Africa,  I am seeing names of specific ethnic groups like Wolof, Mandinka, Fulani being listed for certain countries, and those ethnic groups are in multiple countries.  I am also seeing nationalities being listed for ethnic groups like Somali for Djibouti. I am seeing the continental backgrounds like African, European for Cabo Verde which is where my maternal grandfather's paternal grandparents immigrated to USA from when it was still a Portuguese colony. Of course, there is stuff like Bantu, Berbers, Arabs for ethnic groups I see color race names listed for ethnic groups like White for Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha. The color race names make no sense any w...

My Paternal Grandmother's Descent from Swiss Kinsey Family Through A Branch of The Family That Had African Ancestry

Last year, I learned that my paternal grandmother Mary Alice Gaines descended from a Kinsey family that immigrated to New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina from Switzerland in 1710. She descended from John Ripley Kinsey who was born in 1693 in Switzerland.  He was one of the few of the Kinsey family that survived the Massacre of 1710 by The Tuscarora Indigenous Americans. The Kinseys were not the ancestors of Grandma Mary's maternal grandfather's European American father James P. Cross who was the son of  English American plantation owner Benjamin Cross who was born in Gates County, North Carolina and 3/4 Acadian woman Anastasia Bourgeois who was born in Assumption Parish in the Acadiana region in Southern Louisiana.  They had to be the ancestors of one of Grandma Mary's African American great grandparents.  All of them were slaves in the Acadiana region.   The only one of Grandma Mary's great grandparents that was recorded as being born in the Carolinas ...
