Death Certificate of My Barrow 2nd Great Granduncle and 3rd Great Grandma Laura's Maiden Name

This blog post is about a Barrow 2nd Great Granduncle of mine.

My cousin Linda was the one that told me that my paternal 2nd Great Grandfather James Cross had maternal half siblings and that they were Edmond Barrow, Wallace Barrow, Melvina Barrow Green, and Charles Valentine Barrow.

I later learned that they were the children of Bonnie Barrow (originally Chas Boney) and Laura who were African American slaves in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana and relocated to St. Mary Parish, Louisiana.

Linda is a granddaughter of my paternal grandmother's mother Priscilla Cross Gaines' older sister Laura Cross Bates.

Therefore, she and I are 2nd Cousins, Once Removed.  She and I first connected as AncestryDNA matches.

I got information of who I believe who was Edmond Barrow who was originally Edmond Boney.

He was the oldest of Bonnie Barrow and Laura's children.  He was older than 2nd Great Grandpa James.

Census Record 1910

Police Jury Ward 6, St Mary Parish, Louisiana

Dwelling Number 190, Family Number 191

Charles Barrow         1862
Lue Barrow                1885
Charles E. Barrow     1904
Ivory Barrow              1905
William G. Barrow     1906
Ruth Barrow              1908
Sylvester Barrow       1893

Dwelling Number 191, Family Number 192

Major Johnson            1830
Ellen Johnson             1820

Dwelling Number 192, Family Number 193

Edwin Barrow            1850
Nancy Barrow            1850

Dwelling Number 193, Family Number 194

Charles Green            1887
Millie Green                1888
Charles Green            1910

Edwin Barrow was neighbors of a household headed by 2nd Great Grandpa James' younger maternal half brother Charles Barrow and a household headed by 2nd Great Grandpa James' nephew Charles Green who was 2nd Great Grandpa James' younger maternal half sister Melvina's son.

I am very sure that this Edwin Barrow is Edmond Barrow that our cousin Linda listed as one of 2nd Great Grandpa James' brother and the same as Edmond Boney who was the oldest of Chas and Laura Boney's children in 1870 Census.

I wonder if Major Johnson is the same Major Johnson that my cousin Linda told me was with 2nd Great Grandpa James when he purchased over 20 acres of land in Franklin, St Mary Parish.  I also wonder if there is any relation to 2nd Great Grandma Mary whose maiden name was Johnson. Her parents are unknown.

Uncle Charles' and Uncle Edwin's mother birthplace is inaccurately recorded as Louisiana

1920 Census
Ramos, St. Mary Parish  .......same parish that my Cross and Gaines families were living in

Edward Barrow   age 70    birthplace: Louisiana    father's birthplace: Louisiana   mother's birthplace: Virginia
Nancy Barrow     age 60

Somebody put an alternative last name Bauman for the family though, but I am sure that it is incorrect.
I see a lot of inaccurate alternative name recommends on records, and a lot of it has to do with misreading what's written in the Census. Some of it is based on just assumptions because names are similar.

U.S. Freedman Bureau has a Jan 1 1867 employment record of Chs Bonney age 45
What really surprised is that  there is an Edmund Barrow age 18 on the record
They are shown employed in St Mary Parish.
John E. Moss is the name of the planter on the document

Statewide Death Index Record

Edward Barrow
age 80
birth year 1849d
death date Nov 8, 1929
death place St Mary, Louisiana
Volume 35

I received Edward Barrow's death certificate on July 17 2023.

Place of death was Morgan City, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana.

His wife was put down as Nancy Barrow

There is no date of birth listed, but he was noted to be 80 years old at the time of death.  Therefore, he was born about 1849.

His birthplace was put down as Louisiana.

His father's name was put down as Boner Barrow.

His father's birthplace was put down as Louisiana.

His mother's name was put down as Laura Woods.

His mother's birthplace was put down as Louisiana.

Informant was his sister Melvina Green.
She was living in Rhoda, Louisiana at the time.

I was right that Edward Barrow was one of Bonnie and Laura's children.
Aunt Melvina made a mistake with 3rd Great Grandma Laura's birthplace.
She was born in Virginia.
3rd Great Grandma Laura was recorded as being born in Virginia in the 1870 and 1880 Censuses.

Now I know that 3rd Great Grandma Laura's maiden name was Woods.
There is confirmation that 3rd Great Grandma Laura had a relationship and children with Bonnie Barrow before she had 2nd Great Grandpa James with European American James P. Cross who was son of English American plantation/slave owner Benjamin Cross who was born in Gates County, North Carolina and 3/4 Acadian Anastasia Bourgeois who was born in Plattenville, Assumption Parish, Louisiana. Benjamin created and owned the Orange Grove Plantation in Lafourche Parish. They had other children after 2nd Great Grandpa James was born. Charles and Melvina were some of them.

The Many Ethnic Groups and Languages of Africa - The Most Diverse Continent

This is a blog post about the ethnic groups of Africa which is a continent that consists of over 50 countries and has thousands of ethnic groups. What I have noticed about ethnic groups is that there no clear definition of what they are.  That's what I am noticing in countries in general. In regards to Africa,  I am seeing names of specific ethnic groups like Wolof, Mandinka, Fulani being listed for certain countries, and those ethnic groups are in multiple countries.  I am also seeing nationalities being listed for ethnic groups like Somali for Djibouti. I am seeing the continental backgrounds like African, European for Cabo Verde which is where my maternal grandfather's paternal grandparents immigrated to USA from when it was still a Portuguese colony. Of course, there is stuff like Bantu, Berbers, Arabs for ethnic groups I see color race names listed for ethnic groups like White for Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha. The color race names make no sense any w...

My Paternal Grandmother's Descent from Swiss Kinsey Family Through A Branch of The Family That Had African Ancestry

Last year, I learned that my paternal grandmother Mary Alice Gaines descended from a Kinsey family that immigrated to New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina from Switzerland in 1710. She descended from John Ripley Kinsey who was born in 1693 in Switzerland.  He was one of the few of the Kinsey family that survived the Massacre of 1710 by The Tuscarora Indigenous Americans. The Kinseys were not the ancestors of Grandma Mary's maternal grandfather's European American father James P. Cross who was the son of  English American plantation owner Benjamin Cross who was born in Gates County, North Carolina and 3/4 Acadian woman Anastasia Bourgeois who was born in Assumption Parish in the Acadiana region in Southern Louisiana.  They had to be the ancestors of one of Grandma Mary's African American great grandparents.  All of them were slaves in the Acadiana region.   The only one of Grandma Mary's great grandparents that was recorded as being born in the Carolinas ...
