Learning About My Paternal 2nd Great Grandmother Mary's Family And Their Connection To the Kinseys

I learned that the Kinseys were ancestors of my paternal grandmother Mary Alice Gaines' maternal grandmother Mary.  I found out that some of AncestryDNA that Aunt Carrie and I have are descendants of 2nd Great Grandma Mary's niece Susan Thomas. They have Kinsey descendant matches that they share with Aunt Carrie and me.

I found out that Grandma Mary Alice Gaines descended from a Swiss Kinsey family that immigrated to New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina in 1710.

Their descendants.went to Jones County, North Carolina and Colleton and Barnwell Counties in South Carolina. Aunt Carrie has over 100 AncestryDNA matches that are descendants of this Swiss Kinsey family.  They're descendants of John Ripley Kinsey (b. 1698) and Mary Isler. She, two European American Kinsey descendants, and a man in Switzerland match each other in the same location on Chromosome 6.

I found out that Grandma Mary's descent from the Kinsey family is through a branch of the family that had African ancestry.  Aunt Carrie, European American Kinsey descendant K McAlhany, and me match each other on Chromosome 2 in a location that is African. K McAlhany is a 4th Great Granddaughter of Lewis Kinsey and Sarah 'Sally' Carter. Lewis and his children were recorded as being mulatto in the 1860 Census.

The Kinsey AncestryDNA match that Aunt Carrie shares the most DNA with is C Benner. They share 91 cM and are predicted to be 3rd Cousins.  C Benner and R Kinsey share 540 cM and are predicted to be Half 1st Cousins or 1st Cousins, Once Removed or Half 1st Cousin  They're descendants of Lewis Kinsey (b. 1795) like K McAlhany is.

Aunt Carrie and R Kinsey share 293 AncestryDNA matches that include 47 Kinsey descendants

Aunt Carrie and C Benner share 525 AncestryDNA matches that include 72 Kinsey descendants

Aunt Carrie and K McAlhany share 83 AncestryDNA matches that include 15 Kinsey descendants

Aunt Carrie's AncestryDNA matches that are descendants of 2nd Great Grandma Mary's niece Susan Thomas are:

D Townsend, J Jones and his nephew J Jones who are descendants of Susan Thomas.  D Townsend and J Jones are  AncestryDNA matches to C Benner and K McAlhany.

M Harrison-Wilson and M Thomas who are descendants of John Thomas who was Susan Thomas' brother.  M Thomas is an AncestryDNA match to R Kinsey.

The 1880 Census shows that Susan Thomas was living with our Cross ancestors/relatives and was shown as being niece of head of household James Cross.

There is a January 9 1890 St. Mary Parish marriage record of Joseph Jones and Susan Thomas.

There is a Police Jury Ward 6, Saint Mary, Louisiana 1900 Census record of Joseph Johnson and Susan Johnson with children Chester, Joseph Jr., Ella, and Sedonia. They're listed right before the Green household that has 2nd Great Grandpa James' sister Melvina as wife of Jerry Green. 2nd Great Grandpa James and Melvina's brother Charles Barrow is shown living with them.

There is a Police Jury Ward 6, Saint Mary, Louisiana 1910 Census record of David Woodberry and Susan Woodberry. There are 6 children listed Chester, Joseph, Sedonia, Berny, Leolla with the last name Johns. They're neighbors of my Cross relatives.

There is a Ramos, St Mary, Louisiana 1920 Census record of Susan Jones recorded as widow living in Ramos, St Mary Parish with her children Joseph, Bernie, Leola, Gertrude. There is an adoptive child Alvin Thomas shown living with him. They were family number 16. A Woods couple was listed right after them with John Thomas listed as father-in-law to head of household. My Cross relatives were family numbers 24, 25, 26.

I am very sure that the Susan in D Townsend's family tree was the same as my cousin Susan Thomas who was the daughter of Bazel Thomas and Amelia Robinson.  Unfortunately, D. Towsend's family tree has Susan as Susan Cooper who was daughter of Jeremiah Cooper and Elizabeth Green.

1900 Census shows that John Thomas was living with his parents Bazile and Amelia and siblings Sarah and Oscar in Police Jury Ward 6, St Mary Parish, Louisiana.  They're listed on the same page as my Cross and Barrow relatives. 2nd Great Grandpa James had maternal half siblings that were Barrows. Two of them were Charles Valentine Barrow and Melvina Barrow Green. Their mother was Laura Woods who was married to Bonnie Barrow who was recorded as Chas Boney in 1870 Census.

1910 Census shows Sedonia Jones with her grandparents Bass Thomas and Amelia Thomas and her Uncle Oscar.

John Thomas' death certificate showed that he died February 5, 1941 in Morgan City, St Mary Parish. His parents are shown as Bazile Thomas and Amelia Robinson.

Bazel Thomas's death record showed that he died on March 17, 1920 in Greenwood, St Mary Parish. His parents are shown as Bazel Thomas and Susan Smeish.

The death record of my Great Grandmother Priscilla Cross' oldest brother James Cross has his parents shown as James Cross and Mary Thomas.
